Study finds commercial-skipping DVRs don’t affect purchases, ‘TiVo effect’ may not exist

May 7th, 2010 No comments

tivo-preimere.jpgTwo years back, consumer research told us the vast majority of DVR users skipped commercials; now, statisticians at Duke University say that’s not the case. More importantly, even those who do hit that oh-so-tempting skip button aren’t necessarily spending less on advertised products as a result. Pulling data from over 1,200 TiVo boxes over the course of three years, Professor Carl Mela and colleagues found that a staggering 95 percent of television was watched live instead of recorded, giving viewers no opportunity to skip, and even when there was an opportunity, users took it only 6.5 percent of the time.

Moreover, every attempt the researchers made to find a “TiVo effect” failed — comparing those who had DVRs with those who didn’t, they found no significant difference in the amount TV watchers spent on nine different goods (including cleaning and grooming products) advertised. This could be for a variety of reasons — perhaps advertising doesn’t work, period, or perhaps those without DVRs “skipped” commercials simply by walking out of the room — but no matter the reason, it seems these days television advertisers don’t have quite so much to fear.

Viewsonic rolls out 27-inch VX2739wm LCD monitor with 1ms response time

May 7th, 2010 No comments

viewsonic-vx2739wm-05-06-2010.jpgIf there’s one thing LCD manufacturers live for it’s “world’s first” claims, and Viewsonic has now snagged yet another with its new VX2739wm monitor, which it claims is the world’s first full HD 27-inch monitor with a 1ms response time. In addition to that standout spec, you’ll also get a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, a pair of discreetly built-in speakers, an “anti-glare” panel, a four-port USB hub, and the usual trio of HDMI, DVI and VGA connectors — not to mention a suitably slim design. Look for this one to be available from all the usual sources starting today for $349.

Switched On: A new spin on external hard drives, part one

May 7th, 2010 No comments

seagate-goflex-hard-drive.jpgConsumer hard disk connectors have been pretty stable for the past few years. Most internal drives use SATA connectors and most external drives connect via USB; there hasn’t seemed to be much frustration with this other than the speed of USB 2.0, which is showing its age and is being superseded by the backward-compatible USB 3.0. Seagate, though, is betting big that a new series of breakaway connectors will bring the old usage model of floppy drives into the 21st Century and accommodate complete media libraries, as well as include a few new twists that take into account such modern tasks as media streaming, remote access and networked entertainment.

Wooden DSLR shoulder rig does follow focus with a twist

May 6th, 2010 No comments

wooden-dslrmount-05-05-2010.jpgWe have to admit we have an affinity for finely hand-crafted gadget accessories — be they iPad cases or PC chassis — and we’re especially impressed when they add some unique functionality to match their looks, like this wooden DSLR shoulder mount built by Jonathan Clifford Berqvist and his father Erik. In addition to being built from a single tree branch, the rig packs a nifty follow focus mechanism that lets you adjust the focus with just a twist of the handle. While there’s unfortunately no step-by-step plans for building your own, it certainly seems to be straightforward enough for anyone with some basic woodworking skills, and you can get a glimpse of the build process in the video after the break.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-G10 camera finally gets the review we’ve been waiting for

April 21st, 2010 No comments

lumix-g10-20100420.jpgThe Lumix G10 got pricing and a vague date yesterday, and now the first full review has finally graced the interwebs. Photography Blog put this $599, 12 megapixel Micro Four Thirds camera (and its 14 – 42mm kit lens) through a full suite of tests and came away generally impressed. The addition of 720p video recording makes this model an easy choice over the older G1, despite the subtraction of a few features and the tilting LCD. But, the upcoming $800 G2 offers all those features plus 720p video recording as well, making it perhaps a better choice for more serious shooters with deeper pockets. Still, the G10 looks to be a great option for those wanting affordable DSLR power and HD video recording in a (reasonably) svelte package.

VeriFone Payware Mobile iPhone now available in Apple retail outlets, your CC weeps

April 21st, 2010 No comments

verifone-payware-mobile.jpgIt’s a little past January, but it’s not like you’ve had too much trouble burning through your credit limit these past few months anyway, right? VeriFone — that company responsible for the other  iPhone credit card accessory — has just announced that its slip-up case is now available in Apple retail stores. For those unaware, this card reader works on all iPhone 3G and 3GS handsets, and there’s a built-in stylus for capturing signatures from those arguably shady street-corner transactions that you’ll be engaging in. Best of all, the device and app are totally free assuming you agree to a 2-year service contract and a $49 “activation fee,” but we’d caution you to read through the fine print under “merchant fees” before tossing away too much of that profit margin.

Sierra Wireless AirCard 890 does 7.2Mbps on AT&T, slides into PC Card or ExpressCard slots

April 21st, 2010 No comments

aircard-890-att.jpgTalk about being flexible. Sierra Wireless’ newest 7.2Mbps-capable AirCard (the 890, if you’re curious) obviously isn’t content with fitting into just one slot. Rather than forcing users to choose between compatibility with PCMCIA (PC Card) or ExpressCard, this particular WWAN card actually fits into both… but not at the same time, naturally. It’s the first DataConnect card on AT&T’s network to boast a 2-in-1 form factor, and moreover, it touts integrated GPS functionality for use with location-based services. ‘Course, you won’t be using one of these with your shiny new 15-inch MacBook Pro (smart move on that SD-for-ExpressCard swap, Steve-o), but everyone else can procure one starting May 5th for $49.99 after mail-in rebate and a new two-year DataConnect contract of at least $35 a month.

Creative debuts ZEN X-Fi Style, ZEN Style portable media players

April 9th, 2010 No comments

zen-xfi-style-04-08-2010.jpg

Creative isn’t exactly breaking the mold with these, but the company has just announced its new ZEN X-Fi Style and ZEN Style series of portable media players, which both keep things fairly simple and inexpensive. The ZEN X-Fi Style (pictured above) is the higher end of the two, with it packing a 2.4-inch non-touchscreen display, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of storage, a built-in speaker, microphone and TV out, and the usual X-Fi sound enhancement — not to mention support for “playback” of downloaded RSS feeds, but no other apparent internet capabilities. It’s joined by the ZEN Style 100 and 300, which each pack a 1.8-inch display and 4GB, 8GB or 16GB of storage, along with an added speaker and FM radio on the ZEN Style 300 (pictured after the break). Look for the ZEN X-Fi Style to start shipping on April 14th at prices between $80 and $170, while the two ZEN Style players are available right now for between $50 and $80.

Sanyo’s DMX-CG100 and DMX-GH1 camcorders do 1080p up in here

April 9th, 2010 No comments

xacti-20100408-600-dmx-02.jpg

Another day, another little camcorder that can fill up memory cards quick with 1080p on tap. Sanyo’s DMX-CG100 and DMX-GH1 can record 30fps progressively at 12Mbps, or 60 at 16Mbps if you don’t mind interlacing, through 5x optical zoom lenses with two separate ranges: 40mm at the widest end and 480mm on the telephoto side. Both offer SDXC support for up to 64GB of storage and the only real difference between them is design, with the CG100 (above) offering a vertical style and the GH1 (after the break) going for the more traditional (and apparently less comfortable) horizontal design. Both start shooting in Japan next week, but Sanyo’s not saying how much you’ll need to pay for admission to this party. Hands-on photos of the CG100 (VPC-CG100 in Europe) from the UK’s The Gadget Show Live below.

Nikon D3

April 5th, 2010 No comments

Nikon D3 is eyeing to be the top model in the DSLR range of cameras. It is world’s first D-SLR to offer dual CompactFlash card slots, for outstanding storage flexibility. The digital camera has just the right amalgamation of speed and sensitivity. It has a 12.1 megapixel, with 35 mm frame, image sensor with 12-channel read out, a blazing-fast 9 fps frame rate, expandable ISO settings from 200-6400, completely new 51-Point autofocus system, a 3-inch VGA LCD screen with Live View and a cutting-edge image processing system.
Design
Nikon D3 has been designed and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign. Its body measures 159.5 (W) ×157 (H) ×87 (D) mm and weighs 1,390 grams, including battery. Apart from having a vertical grip, the camera also flaunts of a horizontal grip. A pro-level weather sealed body, Nikon D3 has a 3-inch VGA LCD screen which allows for a 170-degree viewing angle. There are buttons and dials on the body of the digital camera, which helps the users to figure out all the major controls. Nikon D 3 also provides the users many options to customize the controls, according to the requirements.
Features
An exceptional feature of Nikon D3 is that it is low noisemaker, even at high ISOs. The ISO of the digital camera ranges from 200 to 6400, expandable up to the equivalent of 25,600 or down to 100. The latest feature added to the camera is the new EXPEED image processing, which allows it to capture and process massive amounts of data, at high definition. 51-Point autofocus system is a completely new aspect in the camera features, designed to acquire and track subjects’ movement more accurately.
Nikon D3′s FX format CMOS imaging sensor makes the quality of the pictures explicit. The feature allows outstanding results in dim light conditions as well. In continuous shooting mode, the digital camera is able to capture 37 frames in 3.3 seconds, for an average of 8.6 frames per second at full resolution. The sensor captures image data at 14 bits per color channel, higher than the bit-depth of previous 12-bit sensors.
